Pre-employment Physical
A pre-employment physical is a medical exam requested by an employer to make sure a job candidate is physically capable of safely performing the duties of their new role. It is a standard occupational health service designed to protect both the employee from injury and the company from liability.
The exact components of the physical depend heavily on the job description, but the overall process follows a structured sequence.
⏱️ The Exam Workflow
For most candidates, the entire appointment takes between 30 to 45 minutes, assuming specialized testing like a drug screen is handled at the same time.
1.Check-In and Paperwork ± 10 minutes.
The candidate presents their photo ID and employer authorization forms. They fill out a detailed health history questionnaire.
2.Vitals and Screenings ± 15 minutes
A clinical assistant or nurse collects vital signs, conducts vision/hearing tests, and collects any required urine specimens for drug screening.
3. Provider Examination ± 15 minutes
The doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant performs the physical check, evaluates strength/flexibility, and reviews the medical history.
4. Reporting - Same day
The clinic processes the results and issues a simple clearance form to the employer stating whether the candidate is "Cleared," "Cleared with Restrictions," or "Not Cleared" for duty. No private medical data is shared.
